THE ISLAND OF PETULIA
Petulia Island is only 5.5 kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres at its widest point. It lies in the middle of Lake Donika, and is 3,900 metres above sea level. Petulia has had a small number of inhabitants for over four centuries. The sun here is extremely hot during the day but temperatures at night regularly fall well below freezing. The water of Lake Donika is 10 degrees Celsius all year round.
Before the introduction of motorboats in the 1970s, travelling from Petulia to the nearest Dort could take over 20 hours. This journey was therefore made only once a year to buy salt. Motorboats have now cut the journey time down to three hours, bringing new trade and tourists to Petulia.
Petulian local inhabitants highly respect their customs and traditions. They have recently voted against a hotel development plan, so there will be no hotels on the island. Instead tourists are placed with a family as guests.
11/ People have lived on the island for over four centuries
12/ There is a big difference between day-time and night-time temperatures on the island.

TRADITIONS AND CUSTOMS IN GREAT BRITAIN
Every nation and every country has its own customs and traditions. In Britain, traditions play a more important part in the life of the people than in other countries Englishmen are proud of their traditions and carefully keep them up. It has been the law for about three hundred years that on Sundays all theatres are closed, no letters are sent, and only a few papers are published.
Most of English people like gardens. Up to this day, an English family still prefers a house with a garden to a flat in a modern building with central heating, as did their great grandparents hundreds of years ago!. Sometimes in big cities where each piece of land is a rare and precious treasure, the garden in front of the house is just a box of flowers in a little square covered with cement painted green in imitation of grass!
Great Britain is especially rich in holidays and local traditions, which are quite differept among Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England. Christmas is a great English national holiday. but it is not officially observed in Scotland, except by bank clerks, and all local shops and factories are still working during this time.
